annaholmes:

For the month of May, and in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Freedom Rides, I’m using my Twitter account to honor the courage and determination of the (mostly-young) activists who put their lives on the line to challenge institutional racism and Jim Crow laws in the U.S. south. Every day, I’m changing my Twitter avatar to the mugshot of a different arrested Freedom Rider; short bios of each rider, mostly taken from the book Breach of Peace, accompany each new photo. If you don’t know about the Freedom Rides, I urge you to read up on them here. (In the photo accompanying this post are, from left, Stokely Carmichael, Margaret Leonard, Kredelle Petway and Paul Green.)
